Venture off the beaten track to one of Southeast Asia’s most remarkable natural attractions: the Kong Lor Cave. The adventure starts with a road trip through rugged eastern Laos to the Phou Hin Poun National Protected Area. Then travel along an underground stream to discover the 7-kilometre cave, passing ancient limestone formations on the way.
Begin the morning in Vientiane with a pick up from the guide and driver at the hotel. Set out for the 3-hour journey south, making a quick stop at Wat Prabath Phonsane (‘Temple of the footprint of Buddha’).
Lunch will be included at a local restaurant.
After lunch, drive further down Route 13 until entering the Phou Hin Poun NPA (National Protected Area). Entering the designated area, the scenery becomes increasingly more spectacular, featuring limestone karsts, forests and rice paddies. From leaving the main road to reaching the final destination will take approximately 2 hours.
Upon arrival to the small town of Ban Kong Lor, the rest of the day is at leisure to admire the views.
Overnight in Ban Kong Lor
After breakfast, join the guide and driver for a short drive (5-10 minutes) towards the Kong Lor Caves. After a briefing, life jackets and headlamps will be given before entering the cave. Upon entering, board a longtail boat which will cruise through the length of this spectacular cave along an underground section of the Hin Boun River. A length of 7.5km will be traveled before daylight is seen again!
Discover stalactite and stalagmite formations while partially exploring the cave on foot. In some places, the cave is up to 90m wide and 100m high. Upon reaching the other side of the cave, stop for refreshments and walk to local villages, enjoying the scenery and observing a simple way of life.
Return by boat, travelling ‘downstream’ through the cave, to Ban Kong Lor.
Later this afternoon, head on a guided walk through the villages surrounding Ban Kong Lor. The soft light of the late afternoon is arguably the most photogenic. With villagers walking home from the fields, markets and schools, there’s a photo opportunity around every corner.
Overnight in Ban Kong Lor
For early risers, we recommend a walk at around 06:30 to explore the villages as they wake up and prepare for the day.
After breakfast, begin the drive back to Vientiane, taking approximately 5 hours. Upon arrival to Vientiane, enjoy a chance to indulge in the abundance cafes and restaurants in the capital.

The best time to visit Konglor Cave is during the dry season between the months of November to March. The earlier you visit during dry season, the higher the water levels will be inside the cave.
I have personally visited Kong Lor twice: once during the month of November and once during January. On both occasions the water levels were reasonably high, only requiring us to get out of the boat once to circumnavigate the shallow rapids.
Visiting later in the dry season, may simply mean you may need to get out of the boat more frequently, as the driver navigates the shallow-bottomed boat over the lower river level.
Visiting during wet season is not possible due to high river levels and possible flooding. Konglor Cave is usually closed during wet season for safety reasons.
The entrance of the Kong Lor Cave
The first step was to enter the boat and navigate into the fully dark cave! There aren’t many activities that leave awestruck and speechless but that’s what happened in Kong Lor Cave for at least 15 minutes. Navigating through a thick black cave with just a flashlight in our heads was a first and something to remember for a long time!
Walking in Kong Lor Cave
After a good 15 minutes of riding through the cave, you will reach a point where the guide docks the boat and leaves you in a colored lighted trail through limestone formations, full of stalagmites and stalactites. The contrast of the blue, red and green lighting with the darkest black makes a beautiful environment.
The break outside Kong Lor Cave
As you left the Cave and your eyes will adapt to the bright light again, you'll enjoy the scenery for a few more minutes before stopping for a break. The guide stops close to a village where a few women sell snacks and drinks.
The Return to Kong Lor village
The return is made the same way, but this time we are going downstream so the trip is a bit faster.you also don’t need to disembark and wade because the flow helps going down the river. Anyway, even without stopping and doing the walking trail, it still takes 45 minutes to return to the start of the tunnel.

1. Deposits & Payment Policy:
- A deposit of 25% of the total of the tour is required upon confirmation of booking tour. You have peace of mind until 2 months before departure dates. At that point, we would require full prepayment only 60 days before departure for all services by money transfer or credit card payment with all bank transfer charges/ fees to be paid by the client.
- All the tour packages on this website operate on a pre-payment basis. Payment can be made either using a major credit card as Visa, Mastercard, and American Express Credit Card, not including credit card transaction fee ( Please add in 3% fee for Visa, Mastercard or 4% for American Express to the total amount of payment each time).
- If you wish to pay us online on our secure server, please click here and fill in the form.

Cancellations timeline will be charged as follows:
- 60 days prior to the arrival date: Non Refundable deposit charge and the cancellation fees applied by the concerned services suppliers such as flight company, boat company, train, hotels… in accordance with their cancellations policies if any.
- 59 – 31 days prior to arrival date: Cancellations fee of 30% per group/booking and plus the cancellation fees applied by the concerned services suppliers such as flight company, boat company, train, hotels… in accordance with their cancellations policies if any.
- 30 days – 15 days prior to arrival date: Cancellations fee of 50% per group/booking plus the cancellation fees applied by the concerned services suppliers such as flight company, boat company, train, hotels… in accordance with their cancellations policies if any.
- 14 – 7 days before arrival: Cancellations fee 70% charge plus the cancellation fees applied by the concerned services suppliers such as flight company, boat company, train, hotels… in accordance with their cancellations policies if any.

4. Refund of Unused Services
No refund will be given for any unused service after the trip has commenced.
5. Liability
VIET GREEN TRAVEL is not responsible for any loss, injury or damage sustained by passengers. Additional expenses incurred due to delays, accidents, natural disaster, political actions, and unrest must be borne by the passengers. Passengers are required to have full travel insurance.
Airline schedules and local conditions may affect accommodation and itineraries. Should this occur, VIET GREEN TRAVEL will endeavor to substitute a suitable arrangement of similar value. Participation on any tours implies full agreement to the above conditions by all parties involved.
6. Passport and Entry Visa
Your passport must be valid for at least six months following your entry date to your travel destination.
It is your responsibility to ensure that you are in possession of a valid passport and visa and all travel documents are valid for travel.
7. Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is not included in your tour price. It is the passenger’s responsibility to verify whether his/her local health insurance carrier provides coverage while traveling. Please contact your insurance carrier for details.
VIET GREEN TRAVEL strongly advises that you purchase a comprehensive travel insurance policy to cover all aspects of your tour: the loss of deposits through cancellation lost of baggage and personal items, personal injury and death. A waiver must be signed if insurance is declined.
